The 160th Annual St. Joseph County Grange Fair will take place at the Centreville Fairgrounds September 18-24, 2011.
One of the top five fairs in Michigan, the St. Joseph County Fair will feature country stars Tracy Lawrence with special guest Mark Chesnutt and Little Big Town. Other attractions include harness racing, mule pulls, evening grandstand events, daily livestock shows, a petting zoo, great food, and a community tent featuring free entertainment. 150th Civil War Celebration in River Country!

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY pays homage to it's Civil War Heroes in the 150th Anniversary Year.

Are you a Civil War enthusiast? If so, you know that 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Be sure to take time this year to celebrate the anniversary. Visit the monuments in pivotal St. Joseph County, be or visit the vendors for the Civil War Show and Sale pay respect to the massive sacrifices that were made and history that was created for America.

This monument, consisting of a statue of a Civil War soldier, in the Prairie River Cemetery in Centreville was erected about 1909 by Isaac D. Toll, a veteran of the Mexican War, and by citizens of Centreville, as a memorial to area men who served in both the Mexican and Civil wars. The inscriptions read:

A tribute to our loyal sons, 1861-1865. In memory of St. Joseph Co. men who served in Mexico. Company E, 15th Infantry, Capt. I. D. Toll. [This is a reference to a Mexican War, not Civil War unit.]

Colon The Magic Capital of the World! Colon’s role in the world of magic began in 1925 when Harry Blackstone, the great magician and illusionist, lived in the small town. Mendon was pre-settled by the Nottawa-sepi Indian Tribe. The property was later purchased by the government and three tribes were displaced – although some returned and are present in the area. Mendon was also the half-way point between Detroit and Chicago for the railway and stage coach lines. Although the town burned down in 1916, it was rebuilt to reflect the early 1900’s architecture and interesting landmarks remain. Nine Amish districts surround the village and antique and artsy-craftsy shops are located in the quaint downtown.

Sturgis Sturgis offers a unique shopping experience with quaint shops and one-of-a-kind merchandise. Sturgis is proud of its rich heritage, outstanding schools, beautiful parks, and recreational opportunities. Three Rivers Three Rivers is a symbol of the lively, appealing rivers, which gather at its heart. Discovery Camp lasts four days and Experience Camp lasts two. Nature Awaits on the Water Ways!!

We love hearing from people who've take advantage of the great fun to be had in Southwest Michigan's River Country.
One of our Facebook friends shares the fun they have on the rivers of St. Joseph County when they paddle boat into Constantine.

"A group of us has paddled the Fawn from Greenfield Mills which is a water generated mill (that makes New Rinkel Flour and different pancake mixes, etc.) all the way into Constantine where it joins the St. Joseph River. We have to paddle in segments; can't do the whole thing in one day. I like the segment from Fawn River Township to (where Fawn River Road T's) to Big Hill Road.

Depending on the time of year, it generally takes us three hours (even more if you don't paddle steady). There is a spot at Kime Road Bridge that you can get out and stretch and another on down the river at abend to the left if the river is lower at a sand bar.

We see all kinds of deer, different turtles, ducks, hawks, Great Blue Herons, King Fishers, sometimes even an owl or two. The last time we were on that stretch we saw three different kinds of snakes, which are not my favorite critter!!! I own my own kayaks but Jeff Pant in Sturgis owns the Fawn River Kayak Rental right there. Also Karen and Ernie with the Liquid Therapy (another Canoe and Kayak Rental store) rent here in Three Rivers!

I could go on and on about the rivers here in St. Joe County, they are all special in different ways! The Rocky, Prairie, Portage, St. Joe, Fawn and the Pigeon Rivers are all great to paddle!"

Take a tour of the County; go shopping, hit the fairway and enjoy the local cuisine.

A true golfer will surely be on the green this weekend, why not hit a few in Centreville, Dowagic or Three Rivers-St. Joseph County has some of the best courses in the state from St. Joe Valley Golf Club, Pine View Golf Club and many more. Most courses feature 18 holes and everything you need to have a great golfing day, or two.

And of course, you've got to eat so stop for a bite at a family restaurant like Oasis in Three Rivers, the Country Table in White Pigeon or for a more mature crowd visit The Town Fryer, The Grille Tavern, or the Thunder Hog Saloon, just to name a few.

And be sure to support the arts and enjoy a showing of Don Quixote-Ballet in Cinema- performed by Moscow's Bilshoi Theatre on Sunday at 3p.m. before you start home.

Maintaining a balance between excellence and fun the Three Rivers Community Players (TRCP) work hard to put on dramas, musicals, and comedies all for you. Come support their art form.

Unlike many community theatre troops they own their building and have transformed it into a complete with new seating and a flexible staging area. The building used to be a storage pole barn. See the artistic side of life! Every admission ticket includes a hospitality table at intermission and an Afterglow reception on opening nights.

TRCP has lasted 38 seasons in Three Rivers thanks to all its participants, from charter members, veterans, novice actors and guests from neighboring civic and community theatres. Through auditions many of their actors have discovered their true talent, and you can too! Not everyone is an actor so if you're interested in another "role" just let them know. There are no auditions to join TRCP's chorus.

It's not too late to hit the slopes at Swiss Valley Ski and Snowboarding Area or to crack the ice for some Ice Fishing at one of River Country's 16 rivers and streams just for fishing. . With the fresh snow fall this week it must be a sign to head to Southwest Michigan and enjoy some Winter sports.

If you're not ready to come in from the cold, you don't have to! Swiss Valley Ski and Snowboarding area still has everyday specials into early March.

Mondays are still Home School Day, any homeschooled students can come with their family for a day of skiing for only $18 which includes all area lift tickets and ski rentals. The historic Riviera Theatre originally openen in downtown Three Rivers on December 23, 1925. In 2000 the theatre closed its doors after its long run of events and films. However, the theatre didn't have to stay closed! Thanks to art supporters like you, it received quite the facelift and reopened in 2008 under new ownership. Long and meticulous renovations for the re-opening day began in 200.5

Riviera Theatre, when it opened in 1925, was filled with people coming to see the new "moving pictures" that were new to the arts scene. Since then people come for the ambiance, the live events and the still fascinating cinema.

There's always something showing at the Riviera Theatre and travelling to Three Rivers for a movie means enjoying many of the amenities of the cozy town. The Rat Race is our first event of the season and a fun way to get the dust off of your equipment and air out your ski legs. The catch is that no one knows who the Rat is… Cash Pay Out to Junior and Adult Winners. Practice for an hour or so with timed runs. Wait for the Rats (Senior & Junior) to emerge from the depths of our snowmaking sewer system. Watch the Rats ski the course. Take two more runs trying to match the Rats course speed. VERTICAL CHALLENGE
The Vertical Challenge for the Vertically Challenged! This is an all area, all included event for anyone who wants to spend some time skiing or snowboarding. Skiing or snowboarding, not taking breaks, drinking hot chocolate or hanging out on the ridge. This event is about how much vertical you can mange to obtain in the event time limit. Vertical is measured for 1.5 hours as you ski the Triple, Quad 80 or Easy Over East…or a combination of hills. It doesn’t matter where yous ski that is up to you…but don’t stop, don’t take a break. This event is about hill time vs. hang time! Swiss Valley sponsored prizes.

SNOWMEISTER XV …2011
Race on west Quad 80 on Sunday, January 16th, 2011! Earn the prestige of being the fastest snowboarder AND skier. This race is a downhill and GS event for both disciplines. The SNOWMEISTER and SNOWMEISTRESS are the two that ski and ride the two courses the fastest. If you ski and snowboard you will make four runs…one in each course on your skis, one on each course on your snowboard. If you are just skiing or just snowboarding, you will only make two runs, one in each course. Cash Pay Out, great prize give away and lots of fun. WINTER JAM
The best and one of the only night time competitions in the southwest. This event is A HUGE DOUBLE HIT EVENT with a HUGE CASH PAY OUT! MENDON RIVERFEST 2010

Starting tomorrow through the 21st, Mendon is throwing their annual Mendon Riverfest on the banks of the St. Joseph River in downtown Mendon. This will be their 23rd anniversary of the festival. The festival will be held in Reed Riverside Park which features a beautiful strolling boardwalk, gazebos, public restrooms and pavilions. Along with the inflatable games, there will be free performances, children's games, contests and Mendon Riverfest's own Riverfest Idol.

Michigan's Longest Garage Sale

This weekend August 13, 14 & 15, 2010 is the US-12 Hertage Trail Sale, Michigan's longest garage sale. Held annually since 2003, the garage sale runs for 212 miles along US Highway 12, sometimes called the Old Sauk Trail or the Chicago Road. The sales start in New Buffalo, Michigan and end in Detroit, Michigan.

The garage sale is an annual event that boosts tourism in the area that encourages residents and businesses to have sales or entertainment on their property. Some areas will be filled with sales while others will be scattered about, but you will be surely find great deals no matter where you go. One year a coffin was sold at a garage sale for $30.00!

In addition to garage sales, enjoy live entertainment, food, antique stores, flea markets, sidewalk sales, and other community events as you travel the route.

This upcoming week, Colon, Michigan will be hosting its 2010 Magic Festival to celebrate the history of magic in the city of Colon. Located in southwest Michigan, Colon is located 30 miles south of I-94 and 20 miles west of I-69, halfway between Chicago and Detroit.

Colon was home to the Famous Magician Harry Blackstone, Sr. and Percy Abbott who originally founded the Blackstone Magic Company which is now the Abbott Magic Company, the world's top leader of magic paraphernalia. Though this small town of only 1,200 residents is normally quiet and set back, every year hundreds of magicians and tourists flock to the small town of Colon to celebrate the Magic Festival, founded by Percy Abbott and Recil Bordner.

First a small private event, the Magic Festival has grown to be one of the top magic festivals in the nation. In an attempt to boost poor sales when first opened, Percy Abbott and Recil Bordner decided to hold an open house. Fifty magicians from the area of Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio came to watch as Bordner performed with other magicians while Abbott spoke about magic. In 1937 it was officially opened to the public.

Every first week in August, magicians, big or small, visit Colon in hopes to learn new tricks and share their new findings with other magicians. The festival has now grown to the Magic Festival hosted by Abbott's Magic Company and FAB Magic, bring a plethora of magic and shows to the small town. Featured magicians will be Two-Time gold medal champion George Saterial, Chris Hart and many more.

Witness the magic of magicians and their amazing feats at the 73rd Annual Magic Get-Together, August 4-7, 2010, in Colon Michigan, hosted by Abbott's Magic Company. There will be countless illusionists in performance, lectures, arts and crafts, and an ending of family events on Sunday. There will be fireworks after the evening show on August 7th. The cost of registration is $160 per person and includes all events and shows. The day cost is $15 for bleachers and $20 for chair seats. Parking is also free.

According to Abbott’s Magic Company’s owner, Gregg Bordner, “This is a magicians’ magician show; the equivalent of a Las Vegas style magic show. There are 600 professional magicians coming from all over the world who are already registered. Magicians from Asia and England are traveling to Colon, MI to be a part of this regional convention. You won’t see them anywhere else in the United States. There will also be a tour of the cemetery by Honolulu’s magician, Al., where past famous magicians are buried.”

THREE RIVERS WATER FESTIVAL

Currently going on, the Three Rivers Water Festival is an exciting event running until tomorrow June 19, 2010. The festival features live music, a parade, exhibit booths, food vendors, rides, games, tournaments, and more.

Friday night there will be a parade following the event. Also, a classic and old-car show Saturday morning and fireworks around 10:25 p.m. Saturday.

A variety of local and regional artists will be performing in the Community Tent on Saturday, June 19th from 11:00am to 3:00pm sponsored by Three Rivers Banking Center, with a different artist each hour such as Kathryn Tapper, Shelag, and returning this year is a crowd favorite- a Dulcimer Duo, and rounding out the great talent of the day is the Gray’s Community Band starting at 3:00pm. The Community Tent is located in Scidmore Park behind the old hospital building.

The newest County Park in St. Joseph County. After extensive improvements, the park opened in the spring of 2004. Located on the shore of Cade Lake. Open for day use and overnight camping. U.S. 12 two miles East of Sturgis, then South 1/10 mile on Plumb School Road.

Conservation Park
Canoe and Kayak launch and picnic table. Located one block south of Downtown Three Rivers on S. Main.

Covered Bridge Park
Along St. Joseph River, nature ponds, hiking and walking trails, boat launch, fishing, picnic shelter and tables, barbeque grills, playground and restrooms. Three miles North of Centreville, west of Langley Covered Bridge on Schwitzer Road.

Hidden Marsh Sanctuary
The 38-acre preserve includes a nature/walking trail with 12 stations described in a trail guide. Each numbered station will guide the observer to view specific flora, fauna or other areas of interest. The walking trail is approximately 1/2 mile long. This 51-acre county park offers a historic view of the newly completed MEANDRS project, three picnic shelters with electricity, horseshoe pits, playground, picnic area, volleyball court, fishing (a designated trout stream), canoe landing and a river trail. this park has long been a destination for the water enthusiast. Dr. TK Lawless Park
This is the ultimate weekend warrior trail. When you think of mountain biking in Michigan this is as good as it gets. Very tight and technical with lots of fun stuff to keep your attention. Don’t miss the Teeter Totter, it’s an added bonus. This trail is very compact and fun to ride. If you are advanced you can hit the trial at speed and it will challenge the hardest core of riders. Constant elevation change and some great drop ins and whoops. This trail is tucked away and is never busy. Loads of fun for the whole family—as long as they are good bikers!
There is a park with Frisbee golf and playground with equipment for the little ones and a nice picnic area to boot. Good restroom facilities are available and there is a fee to park of $2.00. . US-131 south through Three Rivers and split off on M-60 west. Follow M-60 through Jones until you see the sign that says Dr. TK Lawless Park. Turn left and follow the signs to the trail head and parking area.

Eva Stevens Memorial Park
Two-acre swimming park located on the crystal blue waters of Little Fish Lake, off Stevens Forrest lake street. Visitors enjoy picnic facilities, potable water bathrooms, play equipment, open games field and fishing.

Fred Russ Forest and Newton's Woods
This historic 13-acre county park is a nature lover's paradise. Park offers two picnic shelters with electricity, equestrian and hiking trails, fishing (a designated trout stream), horseshoe pits, cross-country skiing and the largest Tulip Poplar tree east of the Mississippi River.
