Get to Know Us!---Cities

Southwestern Michigan's St. Joseph County has everything to offer! All the amenities of everyday life tucked into Southwest Michigan so you can make your get-a-ways grand! The eight cities that make up River Country are filled with History, Tourists attractions, Amish Country, beautiful and rolling golf courses, shopping, historic and interactive parks, restaurants, continuous events, outdoor recreation, nature and wildlife and so much more.

The cities and villages of St. Joseph County

Burr Oak Although the community is rural and quaint, enjoy its small town charm. Enjoy a quiet weekend or an adventurous day at one of the many Festivals that take place during the Summer. You can also wonder the unique shops that cover their tree-lined streets. Founded in 1835, the village boasts blooming gladiola fields and the Prairie River. Burr Oak is the perfect place for a bike ride, Sunday drive, painting or photography setting, or urban escape, so make it your River Country destination!

Centreville Centreville was established in 1831 and is the county seat of St. Joseph County. Surrounded by small shops, businesses, and private homes, the stately Victorian style courthouse still graces the center square of town. Visitors will want to see the Langley Covered Bridge and visit the St. Joseph County Grange Fairgrounds, host to a variety of activities throughout the year including a county fair rated one of the top 5 in Michigan.

Colon The Magic Capital of the World! Colon’s role in the world of magic began in 1925 when Harry Blackstone, the great magician and illusionist, lived in the small town. Colon is home to Abbot’s Magic Company, the world’s largest producer of magic paraphernalia and sponsor of Abbott’s Magic Get-Together, a four-day magic convention held in August of each year. The event features performances by some of the World’s leading illusionists. Colon also is the site of beautiful Palmer Lake, which features swimming, boating, and fishing.

Constantine Settled in 1828, Constantine takes pride in its historic downtown district, with its well-preserved historic homes and unique shops. Constantine has three major parks, often the site of its summer celebrations, which include the Stock Hydroplane Boat Races, the Vintage Garden Tractor Club of America Show, as well as participation in River Country’s STAR Route, which includes plant tours at various locations. Constantine is a great place to visit and to live. Come see what we are about!

Mendon was pre-settled by the Nottawa-sepi Indian Tribe. The property was later purchased by the government and three tribes were displaced – although some returned and are present in the area. Mendon was also the half-way point between Detroit and Chicago for the railway and stage coach lines. Although the town burned down in 1916, it was rebuilt to reflect the early 1900’s architecture and interesting landmarks remain. Nine Amish districts surround the village and antique and artsy-craftsy shops are located in the quaint downtown.

Sturgis Sturgis offers a unique shopping experience with quaint shops and one-of-a-kind merchandise. Sturgis is proud of its rich heritage, outstanding schools, beautiful parks, and recreational opportunities. Special events are held throughout the year, including Michigan Week Celebration, Downtown Dreamfest, and the annual motorcycle Toy Run, to mention a few. Sturgis is truly a community with pride in its past and faith in its future.

Three Rivers Three Rivers is a symbol of the lively, appealing rivers, which gather at its heart. It has a new, state-of-the-art high school, a myriad of parks, a petting zoo, wonderful bed and breakfasts, and an historic downtown that is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. It is an ever-changing, progressive, peaceful community with attractions such as culture, recreation, entertainment, and an abundance of shopping.

White Pigeon White Pigeon was incorporated in 1837 and is the oldest incorporated village in Michigan. The town was named after an Indian chief who lived there in the early 1800's. Today, White Pigeon remains a small, agricultural town, with several unique shops that visitors will want to see.

The late Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day in 1970 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995 from former President. Earth Day was and continues to be a success because each person takes responsibility for his or her environment.

“Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. We had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself,” Senator Nelson has said.

Now, every year millions participate in Earth Day celebrations around the globe. Get involved by visiting Southwestern Michigan, St. Joseph County.

Nature Awaits on the Water Ways!!

We love hearing from people who've take advantage of the great fun to be had in Southwest Michigan's River Country.
One of our Facebook friends shares the fun they have on the rivers of St. Joseph County when they paddle boat into Constantine.

"A group of us has paddled the Fawn from Greenfield Mills which is a water generated mill (that makes New Rinkel Flour and different pancake mixes, etc.) all the way into Constantine where it joins the St. Joseph River. We have to paddle in segments; can't do the whole thing in one day. I like the segment from Fawn River Township to (where Fawn River Road T's) to Big Hill Road.

Depending on the time of year, it generally takes us three hours (even more if you don't paddle steady). There is a spot at Kime Road Bridge that you can get out and stretch and another on down the river at abend to the left if the river is lower at a sand bar.

We see all kinds of deer, different turtles, ducks, hawks, Great Blue Herons, King Fishers, sometimes even an owl or two. The last time we were on that stretch we saw three different kinds of snakes, which are not my favorite critter!!! I own my own kayaks but Jeff Pant in Sturgis owns the Fawn River Kayak Rental right there. Also Karen and Ernie with the Liquid Therapy (another Canoe and Kayak Rental store) rent here in Three Rivers!

I could go on and on about the rivers here in St. Joe County, they are all special in different ways! The Rocky, Prairie, Portage, St. Joe, Fawn and the Pigeon Rivers are all great to paddle!"

If you'd like to kayak, canoe see and explore any of these rivers, visit http://www.rivercountry.com/ for more information. There's so much to see and we don't want you to miss out. River Country is half-way between Detroit and Chicago, take the trip, enjoy yourself!

Enjoy the weather-Have a fun weekend!

A glimpse of sun and fair weather in Michigan after a long and unpredictable winter is a dream. Don't spend this weekend in the house, instead head to Southwest Michigan's River Country.

Take a tour of the County; go shopping, hit the fairway and enjoy the local cuisine.

Visit McGrady Jewelers to look at their large variety and let them polish fine jewelry while you shop. McGrady's offers custom-made jewelry and has a goldsmith on-site if you'd like to appraise or sell your gold. Enjoy the locally-owned and locally loyal merchants.

Stay at the gorgeous, T&R "Inn" Between the Lakes if you're travelling with a small group or significant other. Or check in to America's Best Value Inn&Suites if you're bringing the whole family, including the dog....or cat, pets are allowed. Enjoy their fitness and swim areas among other precious amenities you may not find at most other B&B's or Hotel Suites.

You've got to enjoy the sunshine too! A true golfer will surely be on the green this weekend, why not hit a few in Centreville, Dowagic or Three Rivers-St. Joseph County has some of the best courses in the state from St. Joe Valley Golf Club, Pine View Golf Club and many more. Most courses feature 18 holes and everything you need to have a great golfing day, or two.

And of course, you've got to eat so stop for a bite at a family restaurant like Oasis in Three Rivers, the Country Table in White Pigeon or for a more mature crowd visit The Town Fryer, The Grille Tavern, or the Thunder Hog Saloon, just to name a few.

And be sure to support the arts and enjoy a showing of Don Quixote-Ballet in Cinema- performed by Moscow's Bilshoi Theatre on Sunday at 3p.m. before you start home.

These are just a few suggestions for an awesome weekend getaway when the weather is sweet and the sun is shining.
